Going through trying experiences that cause pain, sadness, anger and hurt is not easy. The emotions are painful but it often strengthens us for the better. Here is how you can build mental resilience.

Be Willing To Express & Release Emotions

Mental toughness comes as a result of admitting to yourself where it hurts. Hiding and masking your emotions will only later result in agony.

Let yourself feel all that you need to feel. Speak to someone. Go to therapy. Let yourself cry and rant. It is through that expression that you will then be able to let things go.

Don’t Remain Stuck In Your Pain

Life tends to come with its share of hardships and surprises that can knock you down. It’s alright and normal to get down. You will have moments when you don’t want to get out of bed. You will have moments when you don’t want to speak to anyone. That’s alright.

However, don’t become a permanent resident in your pain. Find ways out.

Choose to focus on the positive aspects of life. Choose to focus on areas that give you joy and hope. Choose to see the beauty and light around you.

Become More Self-Aware

You can build mental resilience by becoming more self-aware. Learn more about yourself. Question yourself as though you are in an interview. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Where have you failed and succeeded? How do others often perceive you? How do you perceive yourself? Get to know yourself a bit more either through knowledge of emotional intelligence or therapy.

Get Around The Right People

It’s often said that we are a reflection of the people that surround us. Who do you surround yourself with? Are you surrounded by people who easily give up on life? Are you surrounded by people who harbour negative traits and don’t value themselves?

Get around people who emulate the qualities you want and you’d be pleasantly surprised to see that it will rub off on you.
